Boquete is the biggest town in the Chiriquí Highlands, the centre of coffee production and a popular weekend resort for the residents of David. Set in the verdant Caldera Valley 23 miles (37 km) north of David at just over 3,280 feet (1000m) above sea level, the slopes surrounding the town are dotted with coffee plantations, flower gardens and orange groves. The mountainous terrain rises to rugged peaks that are usually obscured by thick cloud that descends on the town in a constant fine mist known as bajareque.
