Boquete sits in an upland valley at 3,000 feet. However, the surrounding ridges go to 4 and 5,000 feet. If you are into mountain hiking you can climb Panama’s highest peak, Volcan Baru which stands 11,398 feet at the summit. If you are going to take on this challenge don’t forget that even in the tropics it gets cold at high altitude. In fact, you will want a jacket for the evenings around Boquete where it will drop toward 60 at night.
Because Panama can get a lot of rain its upland rivers are great for white water rafting. While you are at Colibri Lodging in Boquete check in with the local outfitters. There are class 4 rapids in Panama waiting for you. For those less inclined to suicidal activities there are class two and three rapids more amenable to sightseeing and the occasional excitement of white water.
